Group Service For Cooking & Serving Meals

Meal Server Volunteer

  • *You will need to call 252-9571 about a week in advance to get an estimate of the number of people that will be here for the meal.
Volunteers cook and serve meals each day throughout the year! The number of volunteers needed will depend on the way you serve and the meal you serve. If you are volunteering for the 11:30 meal, you will only need 8-10 volunteers to plan and serve the meal. If you are bringing the food or serving only, you will need 5-7 volunteers. If you are volunteering for the 4:00 meal or 7:30, you will only need 5-7 volunteers to plan and serve the meal. If you are bringing the food or serving only, you will need 3-4 volunteers. We have an 11:30 am lunch meal, 4:30 pm Day Shelter meal, and a 7:30 pm dinner. The lunch, day shelter and dinner meals are served 7 days a week. All open dates to volunteer for group service are listed on the Meal Server’s Calendar.
The number of meals depends on the time of service. The lunch meal averages 100-125 people. The Day Shelter meal averages 60-75 people. The dinner meal averages 90-100 people. These numbers also vary according to the weather. Warmer months we generally serve fewer while colder months the numbers are a little higher.
We offer three ways to help serve the meals. Many volunteer groups bring their own food, while others choose to prepare food that has been donated to the shelter. We also offer a “serve only” where volunteers come and help serve food that has been prepared by other volunteers. You are free to choose what works best for your group. If you choose to prepare your own meal, just call ahead of time to get the “current number of people” that you should plan on cooking for.
Each cooking group is different, but, we would suggest that you have at least 4 people available to prepare, cook and serve. Our average group size is typically 6-10. Should you have any other questions, email Kelly Wallace; kwallace@firehouseshelter.com.
