Volunteers are essential to our mission at Firehouse Ministries, helping us provide critical support to men experiencing homelessness.

How to Get Started

Our team will contact you ASAP to confirm your start date.
Volunteers must be at least 8 years old—those under 18 must have a chaperone.
Before serving, please watch the Volunteer Training Video and read the latest Volunteer Guidelines.

All volunteer opportunities take place at our Emergency Shelter: 626 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203

Note: As of January 1, 2025, we will no longer offer court-ordered community service.

Join us in making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most!

Individual volunteer shifts are scheduled daily with a maximum of two volunteers per shift. We offer 9am-1pm, 1pm-5pm, or 5pm-9pm. You can schedule up to 8 hours per day. When you arrive, you will enter through the double doors at the end of the brick path. The staff at the front desk will have you sign in and out of the volunteer book. They will assign you tasks based on the needs of the shelter that day. Your signature when you arrive will be verification you have read policies and watched the video. If you need to cancel your shift, please call the front desk ASAP. (205-403-5587). If you need any type of verification, you will need to let the shelter staff know when you arrive. We do not offer court-ordered community service. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Meal service volunteers are for groups between three and ten people. We do not schedule individuals for meal service. If you are volunteering as an individual, you may be asked to assist in the kitchen if help is needed. Please choose a date from the meal servers calendar that is open and complete the form below for your group.
