SHELTER PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Firehouse Ministries is hiring a part-time Shelter Program Assistant to support the daily operations of our emergency shelter and provide direct assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness. Under the supervision of the Shelter Coordinator, this role focuses on life skills education, participant engagement, and coordination with case managers to help clients achieve stability and long-term goals. Responsibilities include facilitating workshops, documenting progress, assisting with transportation, and maintaining accurate records in HMIS. Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to serving vulnerable populations, and familiarity with Birmingham’s nonprofit and social service landscape (high school diploma or equivalent required). SHELTER PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Firehouse Ministries is hiring a part-time Peer Support Specialist to provide direct, one-on-one support to men experiencing homelessness in our emergency shelter. Under the supervision of the Shelter Director, this role draws on lived experience with recovery, mental health, or trauma to help participants build recovery plans, develop coping strategies, and stay connected to medical care, therapy, and community support groups. Responsibilities include meeting regularly with clients, responding to emergencies as they arise, monitoring client wellbeing, and coordinating with the broader care team on recovery progress. Ideal candidates will be highly compassionate, skilled communicators with a good working knowledge of 12-step programs and other recovery resources, and available for some evenings, weekends, and on-call coverage (high school diploma or equivalent required; CIPSS or NCPS certification and prior peer support experience preferred). SHELTER CASE MANAGER

Firehouse Ministries is hiring a part-time Case Manager to provide intake, case management, and service coordination for men in our emergency shelter. Under the supervision of the Shelter Director, this role manages a full caseload, helping clients build and sustain individualized Life Plans while serving as the primary point of contact for community providers referring clients in need of housing. Responsibilities include conducting intakes and biopsychosocial assessments, coordinating with community agencies and a multidisciplinary care team, maintaining accurate records in HMIS, and advocating for clients throughout their path to stability. Ideal candidates will hold a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field, bring 2+ years of related experience — ideally with disenfranchised populations — and have a working knowledge of Birmingham’s nonprofit and social service landscape (valid, insurable driver’s license required).
