Shelter Programs 

At Firehouse Ministries, our Emergency Shelter is more than a place to sleep — it’s a stepping stone toward lasting stability. Guests are supported by case managers, peer support specialists, and program assistants who connect them to transportation, addiction recovery groups, employment counseling, life skills training, and job placement services, along with community partnerships offering health clinics and wellness workshops. Every guest has the opportunity to work with a case manager to build a structured, individualized plan toward ending his homelessness for good. In 2025, we provided 29,509 nights of shelter to men experiencing homelessness in Birmingham.

Firehouse Heals

Firehouse Heals is Alabama’s only medical respite program — short-term recovery care for men who are too sick for the streets but not sick enough for the hospital. Led by a licensed clinical social worker, the program provides a safe place to heal after a hospital stay, paired with case management and connections to ongoing care, so men aren’t discharged from the hospital straight back onto the street. In 2025, Firehouse Heals served 50 individuals, filling a gap that exists nowhere else in the state.

Firehouse Works

Firehouse Works is Firehouse Ministries’ job readiness and workforce development program, helping men move from crisis toward a paycheck and a career. The program pairs job readiness training and employment coaching with second-chance employer partnerships and the Alabama Career Essentials credentialing program provided by Hope Inspired Ministries, opening doors to work despite a criminal record, an employment gap, or a lack of stable housing. In 2025, Firehouse Works provided 3,602 services connecting men to coaching, training, and job placement support.

Moving Toward Change

Moving Toward Change is Firehouse Ministries’ mental health and substance use recovery program, built for men who don’t qualify for other services because of the very conditions that made them homeless in the first place. Led by a licensed clinical social worker and two full-time case managers, the program keeps at least 20 beds dedicated to men working through active mental health or substance use challenges, pairing individualized case plans with free medication assistance, weekly recovery workshops, and a partnership with Fellowship House for medical detox and treatment. In 2025, Moving Toward Change provided 5,456 sessions of support — walking men from crisis toward stability, and toward a home of their own.

Pathway to Purpose

Pathway to Purpose is Firehouse Ministries’ state-contracted reentry program, helping men rebuild their lives after incarceration. The program addresses the barriers that make reentry so difficult — housing, employment, identification, transportation, and the stigma of a record — with hands-on case management and direct connections to services designed specifically for returning citizens. Launched in April 2026, Pathway to Purpose reflects a simple belief: a criminal record shouldn’t be a life sentence to homelessness.

Pathway to Recovery

Pathways to Recovery is Firehouse Ministries’ opioid overdose prevention and harm reduction program, funded through the City of Birmingham’s Opioid Settlement Fund. Jefferson County recorded 483 accidental overdose deaths in 2023 alone, and men experiencing homelessness face that crisis with the fewest safety nets. Pathways to Recovery meets them where they are — distributing naloxone and fentanyl test strips, running weekly overdose prevention workshops, and connecting participants to Medication-Assisted Treatment and peer-led recovery support from people with lived experience.

Shelter Services

Clothing Closet

 Firehouse Ministries operates a clothing and toiletry closet, giving Birmingham’s homeless community access to the essentials that support hygiene, dignity, and self-sufficiency. Distribution is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1–3 p.m., when anyone in need can receive a fresh change of clothing, toiletries like soap, shampoo, and razors, cold-weather gear, or a suit and tie for a job interview or church. The closet primarily serves men, with women served as well on a limited basis as supplies allow. Clean clothing and basic hygiene supplies reduce stigma and help individuals present themselves with confidence — whether they’re job hunting, attending an appointment, or preparing to move into permanent housing. The closet runs entirely on the generosity of volunteers who collect and deliver donations throughout the year.

Day Shelter

Firehouse Ministries operates Birmingham’s largest day shelter program, open five days a week from 2–5 p.m., plus any day with a heat advisory or temperatures below 40 degrees. During program hours, men have access to showers, restrooms, and secure lockers, toiletries, a weekly doctor’s visit, an afternoon snack, and workshops and group counseling for self-improvement. The program also connects individuals with partner agencies for healthcare, education, employment, and other social services — practical support that helps men move toward greater stability. All services are available to anyone, regardless of gender, with the exception of showers.

Meals Program

Firehouse Ministries serves three meals a day, providing the kind of consistent, nourishing food that meets an immediate need and restores a measure of routine and dignity. In 2025, our Meals Program served 92,693 meals to individuals experiencing homelessness in Birmingham. Lunch service (noon) and afternoon snack (4:00 pm) is available to anyone, regardless of gender.

Housing Programs

For many men, stable housing is the foundation everything else is built on. Firehouse Ministries’ housing programs move men out of shelter and into a place of their own — pairing an apartment with the case management, workforce support, and healthcare connections it takes to stay there for good. Over two decades, our housing programs have served more than 1,200 men, with a 97.6% placement rate and an 80.6% long-term stability rate. Whether through general supportive housing or housing designed around the needs of medically vulnerable residents, the goal is the same: a home, and the support to keep it.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Permanent Supportive Housing pairs stable housing with intensive, individualized support for men exiting chronic homelessness in Birmingham. Through 56 scattered-site apartments — 108 beds — near our main facility, participants receive case management, workforce development through Firehouse Works, life skills training, and recovery services, all aimed at lasting self-sufficiency. In 2025, the program housed 191 men with a 97.6% placement rate and 80.6% long-term housing stability rate — building on two decades of housing programs that have served more than 1,200 men.

Pathway to Health

Pathway to Health is a supportive housing initiative offering 12 units for chronically homeless adults living with mental illness or physical disabilities, designed to complement our Medical Respite Program. Residents live in community-based housing close to healthcare, groceries, and support services, with referrals coming through One Roof’s Coordinated Entry system and priority given to medically fragile individuals who face the greatest barriers to traditional housing. Through partnerships with Cahaba Medical Center and the Housing Authority of Birmingham District, Pathway to Health connects residents to quality healthcare and affordable housing — helping Birmingham’s most vulnerable neighbors recover, stabilize, and move toward permanent housing.
