Moving Toward Change

Mental Health & Substance Use Support

Firehouse Ministries provides essential mental health and substance use services to Birmingham’s homeless community, offering stability, treatment, and long-term support through dedicated programs and partnerships.

Mental Health Support

Our shelter reserves 20 beds for mental health care, with capacity for up to 40 participants at any time. Under the guidance of a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW), two full-time case managers develop individualized plans that prioritize wellness, housing stability, and access to mental health services.

Participants receive:
Meals and medication assistance
Group therapy and art activities for emotional well-being
Peer support specialists trained in conflict resolution and de-escalation

We collaborate with community agencies and healthcare providers to ensure participants receive tailored treatment for both immediate and long-term needs.

Substance Use Recovery

Firehouse Ministries offers a continuum of care for substance use treatment, serving those who may not qualify for traditional programs due to mental health challenges, low income, or other barriers.

Our shelter provides:
✔ Opioid overdose prevention training
✔ Partnerships with the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Aletheia House for rehabilitation
Room and board in a low-barrier, evidence-based treatment environment

With support from case managers and peer specialists, participants work toward recovery, reintegration, and permanent housing.
